Aldgate Place, London

Residential & Hotels

Walsh’s practical and construction orientated approach was put to good use on this constrained inner-city site, enabling minimal disruption to the area during this project.

Walsh were commissioned to develop the residential blocks. These are spread across 4 towers between 10 and 25 storeys high and include a mix of studios, one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments and penthouses, including a deep basement. The challenges we faced during this project revolved largely around the site being in a constrained space, surrounded by many transport links (adjacent to a London Underground station, so high footfall) and existing infrastructure. This meant we had to sequence the construction around these services, co-ordinating with local transport authorities on a daily basis. We designed complex foundations to bridge services and sequence works and suggested a temporary works solution.

We were able to engineer a fast programme for our client using BIM, allowing us to coordinate seamlessly with the architects. We fully assisted our client in seeking approvals for sewer diversions and party walls, as well as working with Transport for London and London Underground Limited to achieve their approval to move forward. Finally, and important to note, through detailed analysis at design stage, using a bespoke in-house tool, Walsh identified opportunities to reduce embodied carbon by 26%, to 250 kg of carbon per square metre at Aldgate Place.
