Manchester Hilton, Beetham Tower

Hotel

By utilising post-tensioned floor slabs the concrete depths, and therefore its weight, is kept to a minimum. This is essential in such high rise buildings.

We were commissioned by Freyssinnet to undertake the post-tensioned floor slab design. We also worked closely with the frame contractors to solve a number of difficult temporary works issues, specifically with regard to the construction of the 4m cantilever on the 26th floor.

The building is divided in two. From ground to the 26th floor it is to be the new Hilton hotel and the upper storeys are private apartments. This divide can be seen by the step in the elevation.

The building has a very large central core from which 60% of each floor slab is supported on cantilever beams, the building only has 10 columns at ground floor.
