Wesfield London Phase 2 Extension

Retail

Westfield London is now the largest shopping centre in Europe. Walsh was proud to deliver its eagerly anticipated Phase 2 Extension, providing an additional 740,000 square of retail space, despite the toughest of site constraints.

The extension, over a seven hectare site, saw Walsh develop innovative breakthrough works and navigate constraints including extending across land occupied by a complex road network, the Central Line running tunnels and associated pedestrian tunnels just below the ground surface, as well as respecting existing floor levels.

A complete system of works was developed for replacement and removal of the structures, and strengthening of existing members, beneath a busy cinema in the shopping centre. Walsh worked closely with specialists to develop a hydraulic jacking system in order to transfer the building loads from existing core and columns onto the new structure. Once this was done, the three storeys of the core within the new mall space were demolished.

All work was finished on time while keeping the bustling retail destination and its carpark and cinema open for business.
