Westfield Stratford, M7

Westfield Stratford is one of London’s busiest shopping destinations, but also a growing hub for businesses. Walsh delivered a major office development, in part over the existing shopping centre, with minimal disruption, in order to help keep the tills ringing.

The project consisted of two 13-storey office blocks linked at ground floor over a 7m deep basement, providing more than 500,000 square foot of commercial space.

One challenging aspect of the project was the heavily constrained site, with the existing shopping centre to the north, Westfield Avenue to the south, John Lewis store to the west and the buried Woolwich Rail line to the east. Walsh’s structural solution was a cellular steel beam design with composite lightweight concrete floors. We chose this lightweight construction to minimise the amount of strengthening works that needed to be carried out in occupied retail spaces and the car park below. The cellular design resulted in a shallow combined structural and services zone.

Walsh also kept the number of steel beams to a minimum to ensure rapid speed of construction, which was central to the client’s brief. The final design employs around 7,500 tonnes of steel.
